About Toda Craft

The Toda's are a Dravidian ethnic group and are known for a distinct hand craft called by the same name, locally known as 'Pugur', which means flower. This fine and intricate embroidery is traditionally done by tribal women on cotton handwoven shawls called 'Poothkuli'. Each shawl takes at least 2 weeks to complete by hand.

The embroidery is done with wool and is so fine that it looks like weaving and has a raised surface. The craft is reversible and Todas use the rougher under side of the fabric as the right side. This embroidery is carried from one generation to the next. The distinct colors of black, white, off white and red and the geometric patterns are a craft that is cheerful and unique to the Toda's so much so that the Registrar of Geographical Indication gave GI status for this unique heritage embroidery. The status ensures uniform pricing for Toda embroidery products and provides protection against low-quality duplication of the art.

The Toda's today are a dwindling lot. Organised in self help groups of women who are bread winners of their homes, a lot of effort is being put into bringing the craft into the mainstream. The handwork has got translated into home furnishings and accessories for a wider acceptance. The biggest threat is of machine made low cost duplicates and replication of their unique designs without their consent.

* This product has been woven on a handloom by the weaver and may have slight irregularities that are a natural outcome due to the human involvement in weaving a unique handcrafted product without any electrical power. The colours may fade or bleed due to the traditional dyeing method employed.

* There may be slight differences in color of the actual product due to lighting conditions during photography.
